“Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.”
I realised over the past year as I have been networking with other creatives and small business owners: I love working with them and how much I admire their craftsmanship and hard work they put into these beautiful pieces. They lack one thing though: photographs of their work to share with potential clients. Phone photos of their work sure, but not carefully created photographs to clearly communicate who they are as people and what brand they have to put out there. In a world where big companies have taken over and everything is so automated, unique and personalized businesses can stand out very easily. People want to get to know you, they want to know what your business is about. They want to get back to reality.
You manage your personal brand by putting out into the world what you wish to be known for. Said another way, you are what you do. What I see of you is what I believe you are. Thoughts become things. What do you want to be known for? This is you defining your personal brand.
Social media these days is everything in marketing small businesses. The human brain processes images faster than words. In other words relationship building online depends on images. Create a brand worth talking about with photos that show what it feels like to work with you, what inspires you, and of course to showcase your beautiful work on your website, Instagram, etc.
So now that I have vented to you about my concerns for small creative businesses nowadays. Let's talk more about Sujin Kim, a very talented jewelry designer.
Sujin has been making jewelry for over 10 years and her attention to detail is so beautiful and so unique. Her pieces are inspired by nature. She loves the flow of natural elements, the colors, the simplicity, and to be cliché (for the lack of a more accurate description) the natural beauty of nature. She herself has a "natural minimalistic" style and wears clothing in earth-like colors, textures and very minimalistic, accompanied of course with some her own accessories.
Sujin not only designs gorgeous accessories (at very affordable prices I might add) but she is also very clever about her designs. She hopes to push her concept of "smart jewelry" more in the future. Smart jewelry is basically a single piece that can be broken up to multiple pieces for example a long necklace can detach and become a bracelet and a shorter version. This cost-effective way of glamming up is for sure the future!
Based on her love of nature I tried to let that be the main focus in her pictures. I stylized the photographs using plants, flowers, wood and earth tones to communicate her love of nature and connect to like-minded clients.
I myself own a couple of Sujin Kim pieces and they have become some of my favorite things of all time!
